PPE in nuclear medicine and radiology...

PPE – we use it a lot in our imaging departments, both for radiation protection and infection control. Much of it is single use, and although its carbon footprint may not be as large as other aspects of what we do (such as causing a patient to drive to a hospital), the environmental problems associated with it are not negligible.

A group within the IPEM environmental sustainability community is looking at what “environmental best practice” looks like in terms of PPE. Clearly, we don’t want to compromise on patient or radiation safety, but does that leave us options as to how to implement PPE in the most sustainable way possible?

For everyone working with radiation and needing to use PPE (in radiology or nuclear medicine), The IPEM Environmental Sustainability SIG would value your participation in a survey. You can download it here (it's relevant to both Nuclear Medicine and Radiology), complete it and email it back to envsussig.ipem@gmail.com. The survey should take about 20 - 30 minutes to complete.

Does this subject interest you? Please also get in touch (with  envsussig.ipem@gmail.com) if you’d like to assist with the analysis and subsequent work of identifying “best environmental practice”.
