NIHR i4i: Launch of Pilot 2 of Funding at the Speed of Translation.

Application closing date is 15th February 2023.

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Invention for Innovation (i4i) Programme recently launched Pilot 2 of a new funding scheme, FAST - Funding At the Speed of Translation.

The FAST programme is aimed at innovators in need of a small amount of funding to answer a specific question or to fund a single piece of activity to advance healthcare technologies and interventions for increased patient benefit. Applicants are welcome to apply to the programme to develop or advance their net zero strategy, for example to assess the carbon emissions associated with their innovation, to develop their carbon reduction plans. or even work with third parties to gain the right expertise towards net zero healthcare.

Proposed projects should be designed to address an evidence gap and innovations must have demonstrated experimental proof of concept as a minimum. The research theme can be in any area of existing or emerging clinical need.

The second pilot for this call opened for applications on 12 December 2022, and applications will be assessed on a rolling basis. The Awards provide between £15k to £50k of funding for projects that can last between 3 to 6 months. FAST Awards are designed to have a rapid turnaround, and funding decisions will be made within 6 to 8 weeks.

The pilot will close on 15 February 2023 or once the funding has been allocated. Applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

The i4i FAST programme is open to SMEs, NHS organisations, higher education institutions and not-for-profit organisations developing a medical device, in-vitro diagnostic or a high-impact patient-focused digital health technology (including AI) for ultimate NHS use. Organisations should be able to demonstrate experimental proof of concept as a minimum (technology readiness level 3), and the programme will support activities carried out in England.

For further information, we invite you to read the i4i FAST applicant guidance that provide further details about the FAST programme and eligibility criteria.
