On Tuesday 13th May 2025, professionals from across the North of England gathered at the Cedar Court Hotel in Bradford for Celebrating TRUNC-HD, a special event dedicated to recognising progress and shaping the future of sustainable kidney care.
The event showcased the results of the TRUNC-HD project (Trying to Reduce UN-necessary Carbon), highlighting a series of successful interventions implemented across renal units. These included reducing the frequency of machine heat disinfections, minimising pharmaceutical and consumable waste, optimising dialysate flow rates, and encouraging patients to bring their own blankets to reduce laundering emissions. Each unit also shared its forward-looking plans to deepen their sustainability commitments.
A key contribution came from Lucy Brown, Clinical Delivery Lead at the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare, who talked about Global and National Green Kidney Initiatives. Representing both national and international efforts in green nephrology, her presentation reinforced the momentum building across the UK and beyond to embed environmental responsibility in kidney care.
The event concluded with optimism and a shared sense of purpose, as teams committed to scaling up what works and exploring new ways to deliver greener, safer, and more efficient renal care.
