At the end of September, I had the pleasure of visiting one of our KitNewCare pilot sites at the Medical University of Warsaw (WUM). I joined the team from the Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare, who were conducting a sustainability audit as part of the project. It was really insightful to see the work they carry out and how they approach evaluating sustainability in practice. We touched on every aspect of the department – and even had a trip to see the waste management in the basement!
It was also great to catch up with the WUM team and see first hand the preparations they’re making to implement sustainable changes. They’re setting up a dedicated room for post-haemodialysis line draining, which will reduce the volume of waste sent for incineration, and have procured new bins for medical waste that is not hazardous.
I also saw the building work underway to create a one-day admission unit for chronic treatment, which will help reduce hospital stays and streamline patient care.
While off duty, I enjoyed some of the many green spaces Warsaw has to offer and even spotted a red squirrel enjoying its dinner – a small reminder of why the work we do in sustainability is so important.
Thank you to the Nordic Centre for Sustainable Healthcare for allowing me to join them on their audit, and to the team at WUM, who as always made us so welcome.
