2% propofol in operating theatres

Hello, are there any anaesthetists out there who use 2% propofol in theatre (not ICU)?

If yes, do you still have access to 1% propofol as well?

Thank you.

Thanks Becca - so 2% propofol in 50mls vials and 1% propofol in 20mls vials? That's what we'd like to do where I work, but there are some concerns about having both strengths available...

Hi Laura
At MEH we have 2% in 50mls bottles for TIVA + 1% in 20mls for use otherwise. This was a deliberate approach to avoiding confusion as to concentration. I am encouraging use of 'propofol dreams' to ensure that only what is anticipated is drawn up and so - especially for paediatrics - a single 20% bottle can provide for a number of cases when drawn up in a sterile fashion. I am still dubious of the manner in which it is discarded & would love to know what is gold standard practice. Moreover, any ideas as to whether 1% is less environmentally damaging than 2%?

Thanks for sharing that Manish, we're hoping to move towards what you describe, good to hear it's working at MEH.

There's a recent review on the environmental impact of propofol, comparing LCAs of 1% and 2% propofol formulations. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.bpa.2024.12.003

Gold standard of discarding unused propofol is sharps/ drugs bin so it can be incinerated.
