In this session, Dr Madeleine Smith (Clinical Director of South Somerset Primary Care Network) will present findings from a scoping study examining how public and community pharmacists view the reuse of medicines, completed in conjunction with University of Exeter.
While enthusiasm from the public is encouraging, the study reveals that implementing medicine reuse schemes in the UK would be far from straightforward. The session will explore the complex landscape of challenges involved, including the need for new legislation, repurposing of existing technology, regulatory approval, meaningful engagement with the pharmaceutical industry, and targeted patient education.
Tracy Lyons (Principal Pharmacist, Medicines Optimisation & Sustainability, NHS Dorset) will host a session titled 'It's all rubbish!'. This talk will investigate patient behaviours when it comes to disposing of unwanted pharmaceuticals, and how that’s influenced by the formulation of the medicine, and where it was sourced from. The session will compare findings from within the UK against international patterns and discuss what can be done to improve this.
