Women are exposed to a wide range of environmental toxicants on a daily basis affecting hormonal function, ovarian reserve, disease risk and obstetric and early childhood outcomes. Tonight we will discuss the recent FIGO papers highlighting the growing body of evidence linking environmental exposures to gynaecological and obstetric health conditions across the life course. Environmental drivers and women’s health: FIGO issues practical guidance | Figo
Obstetricians, gynaecologists and Clinicians see firsthand how toxic chemical exposure can affect sexual, reproductive and gynaecological health. Period products are a much-overlooked source of exposure, despite coming into direct contact with highly absorbent and hormone-sensitive tissue. Yet there is no specific product regulation, or transparency about ingredients. Despite being used internally and repeatedly over many years.
Numerous independent tests have found biocidal silver, PFAS and heavy metals like lead in everything from period pants to tampons. This is a public health issue, and Wen (Women’s Environmental Network) is calling for specific regulation for all single use and reusable period products. Access to safe, sustainable and affordable period products is not only a health issue but also a human right.
